What is the cycle network?
The cycle network is a simple system developed to help you plan endless numbers of cycle routes throughout the region. The idea was taken from the mining industry where junctions in the tunnels were numbered to help the miners navigate underground. This same system has been adopted throughout nearly the whole of the Netherlands. Designed especially for cyclists, you can cycle from reference point to reference point, following the numbered signposts. You can determine your own distances, starting point and finish yourself and you will find additional tourist information and area maps on the information boards at each junction.
So how does it work?
-
You will notice several numbers on the maps. These are the so-called reference points.
-
The distances between the different reference points are also indicated on the map (in red).
- Follow the numbered signposts from reference point to reference point in the direction of the arrows.
-
You can choose the direction of the next leg of your journey at each reference point and you are free to choose your own route and your own distance.
